Description: Elatsomers are broadly classified, based on the source of origin as Natural Rubber (NR) and Synthetic Rubbers (SR) and further the synthetic rubbers are divided into general purpose and special purpose according their applications. All the elastomers require curing to convert the plastic substances into useful elastomeric product. The curing system introduces chemical bonds between the elastomer molecules and thereby it develops a network. The curing characteristics are measured using rheometer and the crosslink density by chemical methods. The rate of cure, type of cross link, and the intensity of crosslink decide the curing time required for shaping a particular elastomeric product. The major elastomeric curing systems are sulphur, peroxide, metal oxides, resins, amines, soap and metal stearates. In this articles the selection of cure systems along with suitable accelerators and activators, the mechanism of chemical cross links, the relative thermal stability of such cross links and the effect of such cross links on physical, mechanical, thermal and dynamic mechanical properties of elastomeric product would be discussed in details..

Oil Seals and Moulded Rubber Products for Automotive Applications
Registration Fee: Member: 225 US$

Time Length: ~95 Min

Description: The changing demands for high performance , end of vehicle life long service, even at adverse service conditions and for compliance with regulation are posing tough challenge to the automotive rubber components manufacturers. The oil seals and moulded rubber products are generally used to seal the lubricants, contain the ingress dust from out side, provide damping where-ever noise and vibration are to be suppressed . Oil seals are low value, yet functionally critical components and hence, the cost of replacement of defective seals and its consequential damage are much more than the value of the product itself. Considering the functional criticality, the quality must be built in the product design and in the manufacturing process. In this KnowHow Webinar, the different types of seals and moulded rubber products (MRP) used in different parts of automobiles, and their functional requirement would be explained briefly. Thereafter, the types of rubber used for producing oil seals, the critical design factors, and different types of manufacturing processes and their relative merits would be presented in details. The presentation concludes with typical problems encountered during the manufacturing process and the remedies to over come such quality issues.
