The second webinar in the series examines polymeric membrane fabrication by different manufacturing processes, namely phase inversion (NIPS and TIPS), and stretching. The resulting membrane morphology and the various options to modify the basic membrane by inclusion of additives, or by post treatment, or by coating are then discussed. This will be followed by a detailed discussion of membrane characteristics including a comparison of surface charge, pore size distribution and performance. Typical fibre dimensions and potting issues are then explored for the different membrane formats, ie whether the feed is provided to the inside or the outside of the fibre. The content can be summarized as follows: • Membrane fibre manufacture • Membrane characteristics • Module formation and potting characteristics
Dr Graeme K Pearce holds a degree in chemistry and a doctorate in chemical engineering from the University of Oxford, and is the Principal at his own consulting firm, Membrane Consultancy Associates (MCA) founded in 2005.
