A general introduction to synthetic latex preparation and industrial manufacturing using emulsion polymerization (EM) technique will be described. Several examples of synthetic latex of interest (SBR, NBR, CR, cis synthetic PI) to the glove dipping industries will be elaborated, including their synthesis, colloidal properties and applications. The stabilization mechanism of synthetic latex in contrast to NR latex is discussed. The versatility of the EM technique in synthesizing structured latex particles of diverse morphologies will be high-lighted.
Dr. CC Ho has more than 45 years’ experience as a research scientist in materials science and latex technology. He received PhD in Chemistry from the University of Bristol, UK in 1972 His research was on the Synthesis, Characterization and Properties of synthetic latex systems. He was a research officer at the Rubber Research Institute Malaysia in early 70’s and moved to University of Malaya in 1975 where he retired as the head and professor at the Department of Chemistry. He was the R&D Director at a glove factory in Thailand (1999-2002). Currently, he is an Adjunct Professor of University of Tunku Abdul Rahman. He is also a consultant for the rubber latex industry and conducts technical training courses on latex science and technology for the glove industry since 2007. He has published extensively technical papers on rubber latex properties; formation and morphology of latex films. He holds six international patents as co-inventor on rubber latex and palm oil emulsion systems.
